When you rely on your creative ability for a living, you must find ways to engage your mind in play that disengages the thinking mind so that it can relax and be creative.
Like a cranky kid, we have to tease our minds out of ennui by bouncing the shiny red ball in front of it. One of the ways I like to play is sketching. But I have specific steps and rules that I follow.
1. Create the contour
Create an initial contour drawing. Draw the envelope (outer shape with no inner details) by looking around the room and drawing the edges of things you see.

2. Rotate
Rotate this and see what images you find in these shapes.

3. Fill it up
Let your brain loose and fill in all the spaces.
4. Don't add
Here's my only rule - don't add anything outside your initial envelope. ... and voila - "For the Love of Dog!"
